Kehn's Kinder has been very busy traveling the world this week! We are learning about holidays in different countries. The students have "packed" their things in their suitcase and have traveled to Italy, Mexico and Germany so far! We read stories, watched videos or learned a song from each country. In Italy, children believe that a woman named La Befana brings gifts to those who have been good all year. In Mexico, children celebrate Las Posadas and decorate with Poinsettias. We will continue our traveling and visit Israel, Africa, and come back to the United States. Here are some pictures of student work and some links to songs/ stories from different countries.

Day and Night Sky
The students have learned all about things they see in the day and night sky. Below you will see the sun's sequence throughout the day. Students enjoyed this activity. When you are out at night, ask your son/daughter about the moon and the stars!
A class full of authors
WOW! That is all I can say about the writing in our class! The students have written so many wonderful books. We created the anchor chart pictured below to remember when to use a capital/uppercase letter. You can find it in our class. At home, remind your child when to use capital letters. Practice makes perfect!
Shapes!
Check out the ice cream shapes we made in class. We're moving on from flat shapes and focusing on 3-d shapes in our world. Help your child identify 3-d shapes in your house. For example: cone, cube, cylinder, pyramid, sphere and rectangular prism. The more they use the vocabulary, the better it will stick. :)
Fountas + Pinnel

We use Fountas and Pinnel (F+P) to measure student reading levels. Students read a story and I keep track of number of mistakes, self corrections, omitted words, etc.. Students are then asked comprehension questions at the end of each test. I calculate their scores and this determines their instructional reading levels. Their independent level is one below their instructional level. More information will be going home in Thursday folder's with your child's exact reading levels and their goal for the Spring. At the beginning of the year, we had 19 students reading level A books and 2 students on level B. Currently our numbers are:
Huge improvements in reading levels! NICE JOB! Our goal for every kindergarten student is for them to read at a level D by the end of the year. Please continue to practice sight words every day and please read with your child every night! Your hard work is paying off- thank you! :)
