Tomorrow is the first day of spring and the kids and I could not be more excited! We have been waiting for warmer weather. For us, it means recess outside every day and the spring flowers are going to bloom! It still hasn't hit me that we are halfway through March. We have been super busy learning many new things. I apologize for the lack of updates on the blog!
Math
We are 2 weeks into our addition and subtraction unit. Students are learning how to solve word problems by drawing pictures, decompose numbers to 10, and simple addition and subtraction facts to 10. I am so impressed by their eagerness to learn their math facts. I want to encourage you to continue to practice this at home. Remember, practice makes perfect! There are tons of free websites that have addition and subtraction games. I like Math Playground . Please stick to math facts to 10! :)
Sight Word Scoops Update
YES!!! 18 out of 21 students met their goal of learning 5+ sight words by March 16th. I am super proud of them!!! 5 students know over 100 sight words and will begin learning words from the 1st grade list. Keep up the great work parents- it really shows! We are going to make a new chart to show our growth and set individual goals for each student this time around. I will send an updated list of the words your child knows and still needs to work on.
Needs and Wants
In social studies, we are learning about needs and wants. Students learned that we NEED food, water, clothing and shelter to survive. We have talked a lot about our wants and how they may feel like things we need from time to time, we have to remind ourselves of what's important. Please talk about this with your child. You'd be amazed at their insight- they really are thankful for all the wonderful things they have.
Our friend, Patrick
The day before St. Patty's, the students worked together to set up their traps to catch a leprechaun....
...But no luck this year! Patrick came to our class and what a mess he left! Good thing, he did leave some fools gold for all the kids! :)
Report cards
Report cards went home with the kids today. Please sign and return the white envelope and let me know if you have any questions.
