It's the last week of October! Can you believe it? Here is some quick info I want to share with you... Please make sure your child wears a jacket or sweater to school. It is cooler out and we want to make sure your child is comfortable when we go outside for recess! Do not send blankets/towels to school. We do not have nap anymore. Please remember to take these out of backpacks to free up some space. Fever = no school It is that time of the year where germs are spreading! If your child has a fever, please do not send them to school. If they are feeling under the weather, please let me know by email so I can keep an eye on them as the day goes on. Sanitizer, wipes, lysol, antibacterial soap, tissues We are always in need of these items- especially all purpose/ antibacterial wipes. We like to wipe down the tables and chairs each day to cut down on illnesses. We would love these donations as the year goes on. Character Dress Up DayCharacter dress up day is this Friday. This is always one of my favorite and most memorable days of the year! Thanks to your help, we have some fun activities planned. The students will participate in dress up show and tell, fun pumpkin themed centers and art activities. In the afternoon, students will create their own bat based off the story, Stellaluna. Students will use their sentence writing skills to write a sentence about their bat. I can't wait to see how they turn out! As you dress the little ones, please make sure that they are wearing tennis shoes and feel comfortable throughout the day. Also, please do not send in toy weapons/props with costumes. I can't wait to see their costumes! What we are learning..Here is a quick list of what we are currently learning in math. I have included some links to some sites that you can visit at home to practice/reinforce skills. Math
New pics.. taken by our talented class photographers!More updates to come!
Talk Soon, Ms. Kehn Parents, I want to thank you for all of your love the past couple of weeks! The wedding was the best day of my life and my heart is so full of happiness! Thank you for the gifts- the kids and I had so much fun opening them together. I loved sharing this event with you and thank you again for everything! Here are a few pics I wanted to share! Another update coming soon. Have a great week!
:) I love having a blog. It is fun to share all the amazing things we are learning in class. Here are some highlights from our week: Comparing NumbersStudents began learning how to compare numbers this week. We practiced using the words more and less to describe amounts. The students used egg cartons to see amounts as I make up word problems. The students loved using the cartons and asked if they could make up their own word problems.. This was music to my ears! :) Today, we compared numbers by counting chocolate chips on cookies. This was such a fun activity! The students first counted the chips and drew it in their open circles. Then students shared with a partner to see which cookie had more and which had less. Here are some samples of work! AdjectivesThis week we introduced students to adjectives. Adjectives describe nouns. They watched this schoolhouse rock video on Youtube called, Unpack Your Adjectives. Check it out! We made an anchor chart using adjectives on the Cat from If You Give a Cat a Cupcake by Laura Numeroff. Today, we learned about sequencing. To practice our lesson, students put the events in order from If You Give a Cat a Cupcake . Then, they labeled their picture. (great sound spelling!) Mystery ReaderThank you so much to all the mystery readers we have had so far. Below you will see a picture of JB and his dad. :) The kids and I love having you in the classroom and we appreciate your time. If you haven't had a chance to sign up, please send me some dates that work. Mystery readers need to be at school by 10:15 and will typically read from 10:20-10:32. Then, you can walk with our class to lunch and stay if you would like. Please bring your own book if you can remember. If you forget, I have tons! Next week...
The countdown is on until my wedding! Thank you for all the well wishes and sweet words. My fiance and I can't wait to tie the knot! Unfortunately, I am going to miss Pancakes and Pajamas day on Friday, October 10th. If you have signed up to volunteer, we appreciate your help. I know it will be a big success and I feel so comfortable knowing the kids have the BEST parents to support our class. I couldn't do this without you. Have an amazing weekend! Ms. Kehn PS- I will send out conference reminders for you! We have been so busy in Kehn's Kinder! Last week we learned about comparing characters. I read one of my favorite books, Miss Nelson is Missing! I think the students loved it as much as I do! We compared the characters by using a venn diagram. The students understood similarities and differences between the teachers in the story. Afterwards, we made our very own Miss Nelson and Miss Swamp. Check out our bulletin board if you visit school. We've gotten so many compliments. CountingWe wrapped up our math unit on counting. During this unit, we focused on counting objects 1-10 and counting 1-20 aloud. A few things I noticed after the assessment:
Below you will see pictures of the students building "towers" 1-10. Tie Dye T-shirts!Letter Tt was the letter of the week. To wrap up the lesson, we tie dyed t-shirts! It was so much fun. Thank you for all the extra t-shirts you sent in. We needed quite a few of them. I'm so happy every student was able to participate. The students thought it was so cool. It was really nice to watch them explore with the colors! Class DojoWe have begun using a new classroom management tool called Class Dojo! Click here for a video introduction. I have sent out parent emails to invite you to join our class. Ms. Turner and I have been using it for almost 2 weeks and have really noticed the student engagement! As a parent, you can login and see where your child is earning and losing points. It's such a great tool! It might even help out with conversation after the daily question.. "How was your day?" We have set a daily goal of 10 points per student. We want it to be somewhat challenging to earn 10 points. I encourage you to talk to your child about ClassDojo and let them know that you will be checking their points. I personally think it is a good learning tool because the students are asked to reflect. You can even personalize their avatars- I know they are excited for this! P.S.- There is an app, too! New 5 Star Club MemberSome things we will be learning this week: letter C, adjectives, counting using a 10 frame
Have a nice week! Ms. Kehn The students earned their first BIG class reward on Tuesday. We celebrated all of their hard work the past couple of weeks with a cookie party! The students chose what kind of Oreo's they wanted (cookie dough or birthday cake) , talked with friends and then ended with a dance party! It's safe to say, we have a class full of cookie monsters! Great job, class! How cute are they?! :)
Cheers, Ms.Kehn Below you will see the conference sign up sheet. Please send me an email including the date and time you wish to meet for conferences. If the conference times listed below do not work, please let me know and we can plan for another time. Thank you! :) Ms. Kehn ![]()
What a busy week last week! We are OFFICIALLY finished with testing! The kids were so patient and did their best to show what they know. Although the tests were long, I am happy to have the results and will use this valuable information throughout the year. GREAT NEWS!!!
VerbsLast week we learned that Verbs are action words. Click on the link to listen to the Verb Rap Song! (The students love this song). The students loved acting out verbs and we even played a verb guessing game. We created Verb Action Heroes! The students came up with a list of verbs for their heroes. Here are a few of them! They did a terrific job! 5 Star ClubWe have 3 students in the 5 star club! We are so excited for our new inductees. To get in club, students must know:
Here our the special 5 star club members! ConferencesAt Curriculum Night, I mentioned conference sign ups. I will update the list and post it on here. If you have not signed up yet, please be on the look out for the new list.
We're going to have a fun week full of learning. This week we will learn about letter Aa, Constitution Day, and French Fry Counting. Have a great Sunday night, Ms. Kehn I hope you had a great long weekend! I had an amazing weekend in South Carolina with my family. It was nice to eat lots of food and soak up the sun :) I noticed the students were ready to get back to work today. I am always amazed to see how much they grow week to week. The students found out it was my birthday and each gave me a birthday hug. They always know how to make me smile! Literacy Centers Today we began literacy centers. During centers, students have the opportunity to choose the work they want to complete during the week. Students are given a "menu" to choose from. They are asked to complete 3 different assignments over the course of 5 days. This number will increase as the year goes on. During centers, students rotate groups. Each day they visit my table, Ms. Turner's table, computer/ipad, and free choice centers. Here is an example of the menu from this week. When students complete an assignment, they color in the box and move onto something else. Literacy Centers encourage independence and responsibility. I have spent some time over the past week using the word responsibility in class. This would be something really great to reinforce at home. It will take some time for the students to feel comfortable with centers but they are on their way! math + technologyIn math, we are spending a lot of time developing number sense. We begin each math session with a number talk where the students practice analyzing and communicating their math thinking. After our number talks, we break into small group activities. Here are some pictures from the groups today. As you can see, we are using a lot of technology during our groups. Students loved completing this activity on the promethean board. They worked with a partner to find the missing number with a magnifying glass! Tool Show and TellThank you for participating in our Tool Show and Tell last Friday! It was so much fun. The students presented their tools and then spent some time sharing with their friends at the end. Here are some pics from our show! The rest of the week we will be learning about
Curriculum NightMs. Turner and I hope to see you this Thursday at 5:30 for Curriculum Night. If you have any questions, please email me. I hope you have a great week!
Cheers, Ms. Kehn P.S.- Here is the link to the kindergarten grade level blog. Kehn's kinders have been working hard the last 13 days of school! The students pick up things so quickly and have been busy practicing what they have already learned. I want to share some of our classwork and projects! We have begun learning about nouns. The students listened to a song on YouTube called, "The Best Noun Song Ever." They LOVE this song! Students identified nouns in our classroom and have been practicing identifying people, places, animals, and things. A person, place, or thing is a noun! This week, we started our Social Studies unit on Community Helpers. We spent some time talking about helpers we see in our community and the reason why we celebrate Labor Day. The students learned that labor means work. They learned the reason we have Labor Day is because people work hard so they need a day off to rest and relax. The students created the flip book below. Under each helper, you will see the tools they use. For example, a dentist might use floss and a librarian works with books. PAWS UP BEHAVIORPlease make sure to initial beside the behavior log, daily. This is a great form of communication and the students really respond to our clip system. This is the first week we will have treat box! If a student does not move their clip below green for the entire week, they will be able to pick out a treat. If a student reaches off the chart, they get to choose a coupon. Some of the coupons include: No morning work, borrow a game from the class, use markers the whole day, and eat lunch with the teacher! Last Friday, 2 students had the chance to eat lunch with me in the classroom! We had a great time :) I have completed a Donor's Choose project! I am asking for people to donate towards a class iPad. I brought in my personal iPad and the kids LOVED it. I found a handwriting app that the students independently use during our reading centers and I am on the search for many more. My goal is to have 2 iPads in the classroom at all times! As soon as the project is reviewed and accepted, I will include the link on the blog! :) I hope you have a safe Labor Day weekend! Please let me know if you have any questions. Cheers, Ms. Kehn |
